For example, they may need to chip (or at least seal off) defensive ends and nickelbacks on running plays designed to go to the outside of the field.
The slot is often the first player to get his hands on the ball because he lines up closest to the line of scrimmage. This makes him a good candidate for quick handoffs and shifts in formation. It also helps him gain an advantage in catching short passes and passes behind the line of scrimmage.
